Logistics and helpful information

Check out some advice and tips to help you discover Cabo da Roca more comfortably.

Best season

Climbing at Cabo da Roca can be done year round; however, certain factors affect the climbing conditions. It is important to be aware of the position of the sun depending on the time of year, the tides, the state of the sea, the relative humidity and the direction of the wind. You must always take into account the season and the solar zenith. In winter the zenith will be lower and the sun will set further south, allowing the light to penetrate the steepest, south-facing walls of Espinhaço. In the summer the sun has a higher zenith and will set further north, which, in conjunction with the Nortada (winds from the North), dries out the walls of sectors with more northerly or more enclosed orientations, such as Boulder Azul, Garganta Seca or Cascata, for example.

Water and supplies

There is a water fountain in the centre of Azoia on the main street (N 247-4) in front of the Refúgio da Roca restaurant. There are several restaurants and cafés in Azoia and a small grocery store. In Malveira da Serra, for those coming from Cascais, there is a small mini-market.

Transportation

For those who wish to travel by public transport, there are buses that connect the towns of Sintra and Cascais with Cabo da Roca. Prices and timetables can be easily found online. A bus usually runs every hour. The best option is to drive to Cabo da Roca so that you can be independent, in case of any changes in plans throughout the climbing day. We advise against parking on the main road that leads to the lighthouse. Given the popularity of Praia da Ursa as a tourist attraction, robberies occur here every day (even on weekdays). To avoid getting your window broken, it is best to park in the (free) car park next to the tourist office, which is located next to the lighthouse.

Gear

Sport routes - single rope of 60 m and a set of 12 quickdraws. Traditional/adventure routes - single rope of 60 m or double ropes of 50 m depending on the route chosen, a set of friends up to #4 (with the numbers repeated from micros to #2) and a set of belays (offset models work well here). Don't forget your helmet and to place knots the ends of your ropes;).

 Emergency contacts

In the event of an accident, call 112. In recent years, network coverage at Cabo da Roca has improved substantially, so calling for help is now much easier. However, it will take at least two hours for a rescue team to arrive to help you, and assistance will always be slow and complicated. Rescues in the area are normally carried out by the Maritime Authority (210 732 664) located in Cascais and by the Almoçageme Volunteer Firefighters (219 288 171). Anyone visiting this climbing area should be familiar with self-rescue techniques; bring a first-aid kit, warm clothing and flashlights. Although we are very close to the urban area, Cabo da Roca is steep terrain that can easily be considered remote. Climbers should be careful not to take unnecessary risks that can put the lives of others at risk when they come to their aid.

Google My Maps & Google Earth

In some pages you can find Google My Maps embedded. This powerful tool allows us to share .kml files. On these type of files we can present you pin points of the locations or parkings, the access trails, the routes topos and other information. Also in each Sector page you find two buttons: the "Location" button (that takes you to a Google My Maps) and the "Explore on Google Earth" button (that takes you to the sector on Google Earth so that you can explore the area around the sector without pin points or other info). But you can have an even better experience on Google Earth, viewing all these pin points and information of stored in the .kml files in a 3D rendering setting. Unfortunately Google Earth can't store and share this information of this .kml files. To get to see it go the settings of the Google My Maps you are viewing (click on the triple vertical dots on the red bar on the upper left side corner) and select the option "Ver mapa no Google Earth" and it will upload the .kml files on to Google Earth. (note: sometimes the kml files doesn't upload immediately, in that case refresh until it does),
